After surviving cancer, what about late life effects of the cure?

چکیده
The widely used chemotherapeutic cisplatin causes ototoxicity as late-term side effect. In this issue, Benkafadar et al (2017) decipher the mechanism of cisplatininduced ototoxicity and provide evidence that transient inhibition of p53 ameliorates ototoxicity without influencing chemotherapeutic efficacy. These findings may open exciting perspectives for reducing (lateterm) side effects of cancer treatment.

Secondary Malignant Neoplasm(SMN) is one of the late effects of childhood cancer. Among secondary malignancies, acute myeloid leukemia(AML) is the most common and life-threatening neoplasm. Secondary acute lymphoblastic leukemia(ALL) is rare and only 10% of SMN is ALL. Patients with Wilm’s tumor are not protected from the secondary cancers after the primary diagnosis. Among patients...

متن کاملRadiation-induced Non-targeted Effect and Carcinogenesis; Implications in Clinical Radiotherapy
Bystander or non-targeted effect is known to be an interesting phenomenon in radiobiology. The genetic consequences of bystander effect on non-irradiated cells have shown that this phenomenon can be considered as one of the most important factors involved in secondary cancer after exposure to ionizing radiation. Every year, millions of people around the world undergo radiotherapy in order to cu...
